Gaston is the main antagonist of Disney's animated feature film, Beauty and the Beast. He was a conceited, chauvinistic hunter who was determined to have Belle 's hand in marriage, even by force if necessary.

Voiced by American actor and singer Richard White , Gaston is an arrogant and ruthless hunter whose unrequited feelings for the intellectual Belle drive him to murder his adversary, the Beast , once he realizes she cares for him instead. Gaston serves as a foil personality to the Beast, who was once as vain as Gaston prior to his transformation. Gaston is a character original to Disney, as he is not present in the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont upon which the film is based. Imagined by screenwriter Linda Woolverton , who based the character on the ex-boyfriends she dated in her past, [ citation needed ] Gaston was developed specifically for Disney's adaptation of Beauty and the Beast because the studio felt that the film could benefit from a strong villain, who is lacking in the original fairy tale. As the character evolves from a non-threatening aristocrat into an arrogant man relentlessly seeking Belle's hand in marriage, Gaston ultimately replaced a female relative of Belle's who the filmmakers had originally created to serve as the film's villain. In direct contrast to his adversary the Beast, Gaston is depicted as physically handsome with an unattractive personality, both physically and emotionally embodying hypermasculinity.

In the screenplay , Gaston himself wasn't part of the story. Instead, there existed three suitors for Belle who competed for her hand in marriage who were ultimately similar to him and shared the role of antagonist with Belle's sisters. They ultimately were transformed into animals, alongside Belle's sisters , by the Enchantress as punishment for their misdeeds, including nearly murdering the Beast. In the screenplay , the three suitors were condensed into a single character, Gaston. In this version, Gaston was depicted very differently. Instead of a hunter who was the town hero, he was a marquess or French nobleman. He would have shared the role of antagonist with Belle's aunt Marguerite , who would have chosen him as Belle's suitor, specifically as revenge towards Maurice who in this version was a failed merchant who lost his wealth at sea, just like in the original tale. He also was shown to only be interested in Belle due to Marguerite's insistence that he marry her, and when Belle refused, he was implied to have initially respected Belle's refusal of him enough to indicate that returning to try and get her hand in marriage was unlikely when asked by Marguerite.

He even torments the Beast, wanting him to fight back as he wants to prove that he can kill him in a fair fight.
