Possibly the hardest decision in not only Dragon Age: Inquisition , but perhaps the entire Dragon Age series past and future or Bioware games in general, is choosing between saving Hawke or the Warden. An arch demon appears, destroys a tower, and the entire party falls to what would certainly have been their deaths had the Inquisitor not been able to open a rift to the fade. And at the end of the line, you have to choose who is going to stay behind and help cover your exit the game warns that character will likely die. That decision, for lack of a better word, is hard. Who the Warden friend is depends on your choices from Dragon Age: Origins. Some would say those who chose between Hawke and Stroud were lucky, but even that decision can cause some pause. For one thing, whoever the Warden friend ends up being, they are the only Warden with enough sense to realize the Wardens' desperate plan is completely nuts and they continue to search for answers even after the other Wardens turn on them. That certainly sounds like a Warden you want to keep alive. Not to mention, the Wardens are going to need someone to help them rebuild after this whole fiasco, and who better to do it? Can you just let your own player character die?

If the choice is between Stroud and Hawke, that's easy. Then that settles it; I won't banish them!

For players that had Alistair as a warden in Dragon Age: Inquisition , they faced an incredibly hard decision in the main quest Here Lies the Abyss. They had to choose between Hawke and Alistair, leaving behind one of them in the Fade and knowing they will not make it out. For a lot of fans, especially those that romanced Alistair, this is one of the most difficult choices to make in the series. The choice has created a lot of discussion in the Dragon Age fandom, with players debating on which character is more needed by Thedas and which will be missed more by companions. Some also believe the text to be ambiguous enough that whoever stays behind may not actually be dead. Many stick to more emotional reasoning from the previous two while others choose more on the basis of role-playing the Inquisitor and choosing based on whom they would pick.

For my part, my Inquisitor sacrificed Hawke because she thought Loghain would be more effective at keeping the Grey Wardens in line in the aftermath, and was otherwise just better connected as the father of Ferelden's queen and longtime national hero. I knew who I was going to kill long before I started the quest, but even so, when it came time to choose, I agonized over it. Best result is saving Hawke and not Banishing the Wardens. I have no in game reason to leave the warden behind, and I don't care to find one. Helping to stop both the Blight and Corypheus, and sacrificing himself to save both Hawke and the Inquisitor.
