Encounter new machines and a compelling new story. South of the Tenakth Clan Lands, millennia of volcanic eruptions and violent seismic activity have carved the ruins of Los Angeles into a treacherous archipelago.
It would have been relatively easy for Guerrilla Games to rest on their laurels and put out a Horizon expansion that was just more Forbidden West. And in some ways, the Burning Shores DLC is exactly that: a distilled helping of what made the core game so great — an elevated sci-fi story in a pulpy wrapping, tied with a bow made from high-octane action. You'll once again be fighting machines, solving puzzles, and yes, climbing tall structures. But Guerrilla has done much more here, adding in surprises with new machines to discover and introducing even more fun ways to take them down. Burning Shores is for the most part a great time, and clumsily engineered ending aside, a worthy addition to the Horizon series.

By Jay Peters , a news editor who writes about technology, video games, and virtual worlds. You can easily spend dozens upon dozens of hours in each game and not see everything they have to offer. But for me, both games just had too much. The expansion takes place in a flooded and overgrown Los Angeles, which is now known as the Burning Shores thanks to the lava also flowing through the area. Tall buildings are partially submerged in water, and the Hollywood sign looms in the distance with a giant machine tangled around it. Guerrilla teamed Aloy up with a buddy during much of Forbidden West , but Seyka quickly became my favorite of her companions. And over time, Seyka actually gets Aloy, who is usually quite stoic under the weight of her world-saving responsibilities, to show some vulnerability. When the Horizon series focuses too much on sci-fi jargon and worldbuilding, my eyes tend to glaze over. The actual moment-by-moment action in Burning Shores should feel familiar to anyone who has played Zero Dawn or Forbidden West. You battle a lot of giant robot animals, fight a lot of waves of angry human opponents, and climb up and down a lot of walls. There are exciting outdoor battles and slower lore-building moments in futuristic bunkers. Yes, riding on my robot bird of choice who I always named Simon does mean I regularly breezed over potentially interesting points of interest or herds of robots, but who cares — Simon and I were soaring through the skies! The main human settlement in Burning Shores is as dizzying to navigate as almost every other in Forbidden West. There are some boring puzzles, including one that had me poring through text logs to try and find the numbers for a door-unlocking code.

Horizon: Burning Shores surprised me. After crash landing in a new seaside settlement fashioned by the Quen, the data-driven seafarers players first encountered during the Forbidden West campaign, Aloy is quickly drawn into helping new ally Seyka. With Forbidden West so focused on the bigger picture, I felt it often failed to tell the smaller, inbetween, stories that Zero Dawn did so well, especially where Aloy was concerned. Burning Shores feels like developer Guerilla Games correcting that course, giving Aloy room to breathe in a story that connects to her as much as it does the wider world. Our superheroic Nora Champion is allowed to be charming, funny, confident, even anxious at times — a three-dimensional character. When the overarching story is as loud as possible, with set pieces that Michael Bay would say were too much, there are subtle character-building moments playing out underneath.

Those relationships never went beyond the platonic level, though. Multiple male characters have expressed romantic interest in Aloy in the past, but she would always shoot them down. It did seem, however, as though the vestiges of a romance system was present in Forbidden West ; in dialogue options with the Sun-King Avad early on in the game, players could select responses from Aloy that had a heart symbol next to them, similar to how romance-specific dialogue is demarcated in BioWare games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Selecting the heart options never did lead to a romance, though, which further led fans and critics to speculate that Aloy could be asexual.

Burning Shores Spoilers. Would recommend using that berserker skill yo manage crowd control. The combat encounters that unfold within these spaces feel as accomplished as anything Guerrilla has created in the Horizon series yet. Seyka proves a valuable companion not only in combat, but also by easing the plot burden from Aloy — crucially giving her someone to talk with and, mercifully, less time telling you about what she's putting in her stash. Fantasy Sci-fi Horizon Zero Dawn. Menu Expand. Burning Shores is essentially one long side quest, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as similar diversions were some of Forbidden West's high points, but sometimes it does struggle to balance character development with feeling like a worthy bridge to the inevitable sequel.
