Changing the dipped beam bulb on the old Mk1 Ford Focus can seem daunting, and I have read different ways of doing it. This is the way I was shown by a Ford engineer, and when you have done it once it is very quick and easy. It involves removing the headlight assembly. The main obstacle is the retaining bolt under the car!

The Ford Focus first sprung on the automotive scene in as a personality-laden replacement for the Ford Tempo. One of this car's calling cards is its headlight design. When one of these unique headlights burns out on your Ford Focus, changing it yourself is a simple repair that will save you time and money. Ensure that the headlights on your Ford Focus are off by checking you have turned the headlight control all the way to the off position. Make sure your car is off and the keys are out of the ignition, so the daytime lamps are also off. Open the hood using the hood release handle located inside the vehicle under the steering wheel on the left side of the instrument panel. Walk around to the front of your Ford Focus and release the auxiliary latch located under the front of the hood. Lift the hood and secure it in place with the yellow end of the hood's strut in the designated holes. Locate the bulb cover found just behind the headlight assembly and remove it by turning it counterclockwise. Swivel the wire clip that hold the bulb and connector in place out of the way by turning it to the left.

Indeed I have read many times the advice "Take it to a dealer to get the bulbs changed", but I don't have that sort of money to throw around. Let me start by thanking Benjol for his excellent blog on changing the bulbs on the Mk1 Focus , which gave me the inspiration to try and do the same for the MK2. I hope he doesn't mind if I do this. Handling little fiddly things bulbs, screws, tools over a complicated engine with lots of deep dark holes is fraught with danger. Short of turning the car upside down and shaking it, there's not much anyone can do for you if you lose something and Murphy's law prevents it falling out the bottom. Moral: don't let anything bulbs, screws slip out of your hands, don't leave any tools lying on a handy bit of engine. Oh, and don't drop that fiddly little retaining spring either, because not only could it screw your engine up, but you will also probably have to buy a whole new headlight

The only tool needed to change any of the headlight bulbs in either the driver or passenger side housing is a Torx T star bit screwdriver. Locate the two screws that hold the headlight assembly in place. One screw is near the outer edge and the other is at the inner corner. Remove the two screws by turning them counter clockwise with a Torx T star bit screwdriver. Set the two screws aside in a safe place. Turn over the housing and rest it on the bumper. To avoid scratching the plastic lens or the painted bumper, place a towel in between them. Pull off the rubber dust cap on the rear of the housing to access the base of the old low beam bulb.

The headlight is also located by plastic lugs which slide over parts of the chassis member behind it. Push a flat screwdriver in the clip on the power connector and it will pull off may be a bit tight. On the UK spec car, neither headlight assembly is easier to work on. On the UK spec Mark 2 Focus, the left-hand headlight assembly is a mirror image of the right-hand one, and all the fittings are the same. Clip the grill back on and put the bolt and washer back. The Victi Test the bulb before reassembling the headlight, to make sure it works.

Unscrew and remove the bolt and washer - this is deep down and you will need the extender bit of your socket set. Note this screw is different to the others on the headlight so don't mix them up. Open the bonnet and remove the two Torx screws holding the headlight in place, then lift the headlight forward and out of the car.
