One material that you can gather pretty early in the game is Chitin, which is a hard material found in creatures with exoskeletons. Rather than finding Chitin in the wild and collecting it, you will most likely have to defeat a creature first. Chitin has a few uses, with Cementing Paste and Chitin armor being the most important. Trilobites are the best way to get chitin, as for cementing paste you can farm them from the beavers dam, if lucky you can get from each. If you go collect them, dont forget to drop all the itens inside you dont want, like wood for example.

It's a polymer and characteristic component of exoskeletons, radulae, beaks, shells and various other physical structures in organisms throughout history. The most efficient way to harvest Chitin is by using a tamed Megatherium , Direwolf , Sabertooth or Therizinosaur headbutt with delicate collection leveled up with high melee damage. A tamed Diplocaulus can also be used to gather Chitin by killing Trilobites. Another highly efficient tool for harvesting it is the Metal Hatchet with the metal pike yielding similar efficiency. The pike holds the advantage of more precise hits against small chitin-droppers like Meganeuras.

The only thing slowing you down from progressing further is the lack of materials like chitin and keratin. The two materials can be used interchangibly in many of the mid to high tier crafting recipes such as cementing paste or saddles for the flying dinosaurs, Pteradon and Argentavis. Many players however find this material hard to gather, merely getting one or two pieces per killed dinosaur. There are however easier ways to collect the material. The many caves on the island provide players with an oppertunity to find large amounts of scorpions and spiders which provide chitin when killed. These caves can be dangerous, however, being home to a variety of creatures. Do come prepared with both food, drink and weapons along with stimberries to counteract the toxin from the scorpions.

Chitin is one of the more common resources that are quite easy to obtain in Ark, but later on, you may want to find ways to get a large amount for crafting several items. With chitin, you will be able to create not only certain items but also other resources that are vital for, later on, especially Cementing Paste. This resource appears to be the exoskeleton or shells of certain creatures in Ark, notably obtainable by killing and harvesting insect creatures. Chitin is usually obtained when you kill and harvest the corpse of insect-like or underwater shelled creatures. Depending on what kind of creature you harvest the body of, the amount of Chitin may vary, larger creatures providing more than the smaller ones. You may also find Chitin when accessing the inventory of Loot Beacons which can be found all over some of the maps. A Megatherium may take a bit of a longer process to tame but they can harvest a good deal of Chitin from corpses. Sabertooth is also good for harvesting Chitin but a Therizinosaurus with a higher amount of harvest levels, allowing it to farm an extra amount of resources.
