In February this year I made a whirlwind five-day tour of Istanbul--queen of the Bosphorus, historic crossroads of East and West, bridge between Europe and Asia, between the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and much, much more. Istanbul aka Constantinople aka Byzantium is fabulously indescribable and indescribably fabulous, breathtaking in its position overlooking the Sea of Marmara, with a history as great as that of Rome or Athens, plus a staggering series of monuments, Roman, Christian and Moslem sometimes all three in one sacred space , an engaging populace quick to welcome strangers, fascinating markets food, carpets, jewelry, touristic tchotchkes, plumbing supplies—we saw it all and a host of restaurants from hole-in-the-wall kebab joints to grand establishments. There had been a horrific terrorist attack in the city just a month earlier and another more recently, after our departure. Yes, we replied, we were aware —as we would have been in Paris or indeed in San Bernardino, California. Truth to tell, the evil of terrorism makes itself known just about anywhere in the world these days.
