Ignition condenser specifications
Basically the function of a condenser in a coil ignition circuit is to reduce the spark at the contact points as they open in the distributor and thus minimise burning and pitting of the points. Arcing is caused by the effect of self induction in the coil as the points interrupt ignition condenser specifications flow of current, ignition condenser specifications. The resultant collapse of the magnetic field produces a high voltage to be generated in the primary winding which then tends to flow across the points, thus causing burning or pitting.
By Friartuck June 29, in Technical. Does anyone know what the capacatance value in micro farads of a condensor for a four cylinder 6 volt ignition system? This is for an eight cylinder engine that uses dual ignition; two seperate sets of points, coils and condensors. The originals are shorted out background in photo and their packaging requires a replacement that has a mounting flange with wire to the points candidate in foreground , all intenal to the distributor. My 34 Packard uses what appears to be a similar system to the one you're inquring about; 6-volt, dual coil, dual point, dual condensor, with a double-ended rotor for two 4-cylinder systems. A good condenser, more correctly a capacitor, for a GM 6 volt ignition system has a capacitance of. I think the 12 volt system would be about the same.

The Magneto Guys. Condensers - theory. Before considering the function of the condenser in a magneto ignition circuit, it may be worthwhile to outline the basic operation of the magneto ignition circuit as a whole. The secondary winding is wound directly over the primary winding and so this winding magnetic field is also linked to the secondary windings. When the points open, the current flowing in the primary is interrupted and the winding magnetic field collapses, thereby passing lines of magnetic flux through both the primary and secondary windings. This results in a high voltage — several hundred volts - to be induced in the primary winding and a considerably higher voltage — thousands of volts - to be induced in the secondary winding.

Back more years than I want to count I had an instructor explain that you could tell if the rating of a condenser was high or low by which side of he points had the deposits and or burned area on it. Sunroof Deflectors. Mar 7, Jack H. Once rated voltage is higher than applied voltage, increasing rated voltage will reduce it's failure rate. I know once in a long while you got a "perfect" condenser and the points would not burn but this was rare, usually they were off one way or the other. Me and our automotive instructor rescued a couple oscilloscopes from the dumpster at school. But keep in mind, the resonant frequency occurs when the capacitance reactance of the condenser equals the inductive reactance of the ignition coil. What's new New posts Latest activity. Voltage rating is how much voltage it can take before it fails. With a condenser of the wrong value, who knows what resonant frequency will occur and it may not be optimum for the particular ignition coil. I have a Tektronics HV scope probe rated at 40Kv peak that can withstand the spikes. AMP Research.

Hmm, I would theorize some call it "mental thinking" that it also has something to do with the the coil's resistance.. The resultant collapse of the magnetic field produces a high voltage to be generated in the primary winding which then tends to flow across the points, thus causing burning or pitting. From reading posts over the years, I was under the impression that the values were not critical, but it sounds like using a condenser with a lower voltage rating may shorten its life. So for all practical purposes there is only 1 significant secondary high voltage peak. Mica condensers, although very robust and reliable were an expensive option so some manufacturers moved to a wax impregnated paper dielectric. Luckily, some capacitors with particular dielectrics and thin metal electrodes get round the problem because the metal melts or evaporates in a breakdown vicinity, isolating it from the rest of the capacitor.
