In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , players are able to become a part of several storylines that can shape the future of Skyrim - and potentially the future of the Elder Scrolls series as a whole. One of the central stories in the game is that of the Skyrim civil war questline, which allows players to choose between supporting the Imperial faction or the Stormcloaks. But what does this choice actually mean in the context of the game's story? While the return of Alduin is arguably the focus of the majority of Skyrim , the fight between the Stormcloaks and the Imperials is present throughout almost all aspects of the game. Skyrim begins with players getting caught in an Imperial ambush alongside Stormcloak soldiers, and various NPCs will attempt to persuade the Dragonborn into joining one faction or the other. The Skyrim civil war questline even ties into the main story eventually as players are forced to either call a peace summit or secure victory one way or another. Both sides of the Skyrim civil war feature a unique storyline with interesting characters, so for many fans it might be worth replaying on both sides to experience the full scope of Skyrim 's story.

Skyrim's not in good shape when the Dragonborn arrives on the scene. Bandits pillage the countryside, and dragons are awakening and terrorizing every hold from Windhelm to Solitude. And, naturally, political turmoil has enveloped the realm. They have Jarls competing for power, the Altmer plotting behind the scenes, and most importantly, the Stormcloaks threaten to secede Skyrim from what they view as a crumbling empire. After all, Skyrim belongs to the Nords! Not the dragons, not the Imperials, and most certainly not the uppity High Elves. That said, Skyrim has long been a part of the Empire, affording them protection, stalwart allies, fruitful trade, and the rule of law. That leads to one of the earliest conundrums players get to face when starting a new game: join the Stormcloaks, or join the Empire. You got caught by the Imperials illegally crossing the border, and sitting next to you is Jarl Ulfric, the leader of the Stormcloacks captured in the same ambush. The influence of this conflict throughout the game goes beyond the main quest line and has significant connotations for the control of each Hold. The Stormcloacks offer better armor and weapons for a Light Armor character, whereas the Imperials are more suitable for Heavy Armor characters. The Empire wants to keep Skyrim as part of their domain to honor the White-Gold Concordat and avoid another war against the Aldmeri Dominion. Stormcloaks want to defend their customs, and a central part of their culture is accepting Talos as their god. Siding with the Stormcloaks implies that you believe Talos is a legitimate god and that Nord culture deserves respect and should get defended from foreign influence. Siding with the Imperial Legion in Skyrim will mean that you support the idea of keeping Skyrim and the Empire united to deter the Aldmeri Dominion from trying to go to war again. One of those Stormcloak armor sets is bugged so it doesn't recognize it as a complete light armor set. Both sides stink, but they stink in different ways. Because Skyrim encourages players to make their own way however they wish to, it's perfectly feasible to beat the game without ever choosing between the Skyrim Stormcloaks or Imperials. The only reason I even have Open Civil War and previously Civil War Overhaul installed is because I want to experience the cut Markarth and Riften sieges, and literally nobody thought of making a CW mod that does that, and only that. Would this be a better fit for rebels? There are several moments throughout Skyrim when the question of whether to choose Stormcloak or Imperial is much easier to make — because the player's head, or the head of an innocent person, is on the chopping block. In the event of a Stormcloak victory, Skyrim more than likely becomes independent, freeing itself from the influence of the Empire and the Thalmor. The Imperials definitely treat the deposed jarls much better than the Stormcloaks do.
