Prakash Jha is one of my favourite directors from Hindi cinema simply because the man is unapologetic about his craft and he goes all out when it comes to depicting raw reality on the big screen.

Gangaajal: The Holy Weapon transl. Holy Water is a Indian Hindi -language action crime drama film written, directed, co-produced and edited by Prakash Jha. Featuring an ensemble cast of 87 actors, it revolves around the Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Ajay Devgn who takes charge of the fictitious district of Tejpur, Bihar , known for its high crime rate and organised crime carried out by dons Sadhu Mohan Joshi and Sunder Yadav Yashpal Sharma. Due to the local police's slow response to crimes, residents of the district resort to pouring acid in the eyes of the criminals as an instrument for extrajudicial justice. Following the release of his directorial debut Damul , Jha conceived an idea for his next venture that would be titled Gangaajal , which would be about corruption and political violence. Jha was unfamiliar with the subject matter and had no desire to start production, and took twenty years to write the story.

The Bhagalpur blindings refers to a series of incidents in and in Bhagalpur in the state of Bihar, India when police blinded 31 individuals under trial or convicted criminals, according to some versions by pouring acid into their eyes. The incident became infamous as the Bhagalpur blindings. The incident was widely discussed, debated and acutely criticised by several human rights organisations. The Bhagalpur blinding case had made criminal jurisprudence history by becoming the first in which the Indian Supreme Court ordered compensation for violation of basic human rights. The Bollywood movie Gangaajal is loosely based on this incident. Amitabh Parashar's documentary "The Eyes of Darkness" was inspired by this incident, documenting blindings as they continue even today.

An IPS officer motivates and leads a dysfunctional, corrupt police force of Tezpur to fight against the corrupt politician. Amit Kumar : Where's Sundar? Amit Kumar : And where have you hidden these 4? Sadhu Yadav : This game of hide and seek is played by people like you S. I do everything in open daylight. If you have the authority, go ahead arrest me. Sadhu isn't afraid. Amit Kumar : Till now you're oblivious to what fear actually is Sadhu. In the next few scenes, we find out that Kumar follows his gut and is rewarded for it. But a little later in the film, Kumar is tested on this very decision when Yadav and his colleagues commit a horrific act of brutality. They blind two prisoners who they thought deserved a gruesome punishment. In the aftermath of the blindings, the town unconditionally stands by the accused cops, who they claim have brought them justice faster than the due process of law. Despite the public mood, Kumar takes a moral stand against his colleagues for their ghastly actions. For the better part of the noughties, Bollywood was churning out movies which romanticised police officers bypassing the law for the just cause of decriminalising the streets.
