There are lots of things to unlock, with many of them connected to defeating certain bosses. However, some are a little more hidden, including what might be Repentance 's most interesting series of unlocks. Tainted characters are new versions of every single Binding of Isaac character, with their core abilities reimagined to be more interesting to a fan of modern roguelikes. These incredibly unique characters are somewhat difficult to unlock, requiring players to have already made some significant progress through the game's unlocks. Tainted characters are also more complicated to play due to their advanced mechanics, so players must make sure they have a fair amount of experience with the game before playing as them. To start, players will need to unlock the alternate path that was one of Repentance 's main additions. The alternate path is basically a new variation to every existing floor in the game.

Five of these characters Isaac , Magdalene , Cain , Judas , and??? In the Afterbirth expansion, one new character Lilith was added, plus one more character via an update Keeper. In the Repentance expansion, two characters Bethany and Jacob and Esau were added. Each character starts with different stats and abilities that give them their own unique playstyle. Repentance also added an alternate 'tainted' version of all 17 characters, unlockable in the expansion's final endgame area. Each tainted character maintains the same general theme as the original incarnation, but twisted or taken to an extreme. Many have unique, game-changing mechanics, but often come with a corresponding drawback.
Unlocking tainted characters is simple to explain, as the process is the same for each one. Open the chest here to find the Red Key item, unlocking it for future runs. You can now use this item to unlock Tainted Characters. It will open a hidden room with the tainted version of the character you are playing as inside. Touch that character to unlock them for future runs. Most of the tainted characters have similar traits to their regular counterparts, but they generally all have an extremely powerful ability balanced by a significant drawback. They all have varying levels of starting stats and the like, but here are the main things that separate each tainted character from their regular versions. All these tainted characters add unique spins on the game, and a few of them will dramatically change the way you have to play The Binding of Isaac in order to succeed.
