Swapped out my first pickguard Gibson J At the time, I wasn't crazy about the pickguard, but it was such a great sounding guitar and had the other features I wanted early 50s style headstock and chunky neck that I figured I'd get around to changing out the pickguard one day. That day was yesterday -- worked like a charm. Cleaned up the residual glue residue with Ronsonol, polished the surface up with Virtuoso, and installed the new J pickguard made by James Burkett of firestripepickguards. Turned out wonderfully, as can be seen below. If there is one complaint, it is that the geniuses at Gibson didn't allow the nitro finish to dry appropriately before installing the original pickguard, so now I'm left with some impressions in the finish where the previous pickguard was.

General Comments: Initially, the Gibson J45 guitar differed only slightly from the discontinued J Internal contruction changes from the J included top bracing strenghtened slightly with 1" set "X" brace behind the soundhole, tall and thin back braces, and most importantly, scalloped tall and thin top braces.

That's pretty funny. I've looked around but most of the replacements advertise them as being "thick. Here he is on reverb if you want to reach out. Unless you glue a replacement directly to the unfinished area of the top which was how it was done with original Gibsons, there shouldn't be a potential pickguard crack issue. To do that for the long run, all you have to do is keep that original guard, and pass it on to the next owner with the guitar.
