Indigo Blue is her first YA novel the other being an autobiography , and features her first-class knowledge of sailing and boat matinence, as well as a combination of fascinating Australia history, magical realism, and romance. Indigo Blue is a lovely novel that kept a smile on my face from start to finish. By far my favourite element of the book is the mystical storyline, which develops slowly and intrigingly. Indigo Blue comes across as a standard contemporary YA book: girl moves to a small town, meets a hot guy, falls for him, etc. Indigo Blue is more like a magical realism book, but also filled with local folklore, Aussie history, and vivid descriptions of coastal Australia. Alex was a very plain protagonist, but for the most part I liked her.

Books have had a huge impact on me. They gave me a reason to push through my early struggles with dyslexia, and it was a book that inspired me to sail around the world. Being given the opportunity to write a book about my voyage taught me a huge amount and gave me an appetite to write more. Perhaps a little audaciously, I also thought that I would be able to do it justice, that my love of sailing would add a nice perspective to the story. Well, I do have an ulterior motive… I want more young girls to fall in love with sailing! Except for the fact that they drove, Alex had her boat license, and she falls for a guy, Sam, who is? I liked the characters even though I didn't feel that connected to them. Love, mystery and heartbreak meant I couldn't put this book down, but when I reached the last page I felt like the story wasn't finished. I still have questions about what happened to some of the characters. Indigo Blue is a lovely novel that kept a smile on my face from start to finish. As Alex discovers a piece of local history she also begins to untangle the mystery that surrounds Sam and what makes him so different. This is literally so cute and I just want to hug this book so much. I would re-read it or it left me with an amazing feeling at the end — blown away, moved or just really impressed. I love the jokes between the two, how respectful Sam is of her friends, how he helps Alex with her boat Keep in mind that I was 11 when writing this, had a very small sheet of paper to contain my words in, and had to follow the teachers format of a plot summary, list of main characters, and what i'd change about the book. But an old sailing boat in need of repair and new school friendships quickly fill her time. But all is not smooth sailing sorry, couldn't help adding that pun , as Alex pushes her sailing abilities and wrestles with the discovery she makes about Sam. Fantasies of getting it on with mermen? The romance felt a little strange - very childish in parts even though the main character is supposed to be in her late teens. I love the jokes between the two, how respectful Sam is of her friends, how he helps Alex with her boat … just everything between them was simply wonderful. The ending was good but it was a little slow.
