Created as part of a kale caulifla effort between franchise creator Akira Toriyama and Toei Animationkale caulifla, the characters first appeared in the Morgoth lotr Saga arc of Dragon Ball Super as antagonistic characters from an alternate universe to the setting of the Dragon Ball series: Kale was originally conceived as a derivative character of popular Dragon Ball villain Broly by Toei Animation staff, and Caulifla was personally designed by Toriyama [1] as a companion and counterpoint to Kale.

During the setup for Dragon Ball Super 's Tournament of Power arc, Cabba's search for fighters for his Universe 6 team led him to a pair of female of Saiyan warriors, Caulifla and Kale. Caulifla was depicted as arrogant, ambitious, and eager for a challenge, while the timid and shy Kale unknowingly hid the power of a Legendary Super Saiyan. Though neither character was powerful enough to beat Goku, their fights with him caused them to grow stronger over a short of period of time. After fusing, they became Kefla, who was so strong that Goku had to go Ultra Instinct to win. Clearly, Caulifla and Kale aren't on Goku's level yet, unless they fuse, but they could continue to climb higher.
