As a South Indian, my first kanakavalli saree was a Kanchivaram which I wore for my class 10th farewell! If you have been raised in India, chances are likely that as a young woman, your first sarees will all be silks!

I distinctly remember this was my first time I laid eyes on a Kanjeevaram saree, as commonly known to a Mumbaikar, or a Kancheevaram as traditionally called by a south Indian. Until then I had only seen Bollywood diva Rekha, dazzling in gold and metallic thread inlay zari Kanjeevaram silk saree draped about her.
