Karna was the son of the Sun in the Mahabharata. His Kshatriya mother Kunti abandoned him and a Suta low-caste family adopted him. A series of unfortunate events, along with bad company, made him the tragic hero of the Mahabharata. His desperation eventually led him to join Duryodhana and his unrighteous allies. He had righteous heart, but he commited many unrighteous deeds. So was Karna a tragic hero, or did he deserve his fate. That will up to you to judge after reading this post. Toggle navigation. Karna is one of the central figures in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. He was the first son of Kunti, and was thus half brother to the Pandavas, and the eldest of them. Although Duryodhana of the Kauravas appoint him king of Anga, his role in the legend far exceeds the importance of a king. He fought for the Kauravas in the great battle at Kurukshetra. As such, the name Karna and various other spellings is a common Indian first name.

KARNA is one of the most fascinating characters of Mahabharata , the longest Sanskrit epic written two millennium ago. Besides being an invincible warrior he was known for his generosity. Karna was the son of Kunti from the Sun God. The story is that Kunti, while still very young, had occasion to serve Rishi sage Durvasa. She looked after him with great dedication. Durvasa was highly pleased. He gave Kunti a mantra chant and said that whichever God she would think of after reciting the mantra, would appear before her and bless her with a son endowed with his own godly qualities. As the son of the Sun God he had received a kavach and a Kundal armor and earrings. The second factor that caused his death was the curse by Parshurama.

Kunti was granted the boon to bear a child with desired divine qualities from the gods and without much knowledge, Kunti invoked the sun god to confirm it if it was true indeed. Karna was secretly born to an unmarried Kunti in her teenage years, and fearing outrage and backlash from society over her premarital pregnancy, Kunti had no choice but to abandon the newly born Karna adrift in a basket on the Ganges, in the hope that he finds foster parents. Karna grows up to be an accomplished warrior of extraordinary abilities, a gifted speaker and becomes a loyal friend of Duryodhana. He was a key warrior who aimed to kill the third Pandava Arjuna but dies in a battle with him during the war. He is a tragic hero in the Mahabharata , in a manner similar to Aristotle's literary category of "flawed good man". His character is developed in the epic to raise and discuss major emotional and dharma duty, ethics, moral dilemmas. Karna was also called with many names. The second meaning of Karna as "rudder and helm" is also an apt metaphor given Karna's role in steering the war in Book 8 of the epic, where the good Karna confronts the good Arjuna, one of the climax scenes wherein the Mahabharata authors repeatedly deploy the allegories of ocean and boat to embed layers of meanings in the poem.

Once inside, he fought valiantly and single handedly defeated almost all reputed generals of the Kauravas including Karna, Drona and Duryodhana.

A birth in the haste of youth, Karna had to bear the runt of his birth throughout his life. Seen as the anti-hero who, despite his goodness, was ruined due to his bitterness and loyalty to the Kauravas, this is his story.
