On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire French : Portrait de la jeune fille en feu , lit. Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of a sexual affair between two young women: an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait. It marked Haenel's final film role prior to her retirement from the French film industry in At the end of the eighteenth century, Marianne, a painter, is teaching an art class in France. One of her female students asks her about a painting of hers, which Marianne calls Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Years previously, Marianne arrives on a distant island in Brittany. Marianne explains her actions to the Countess by saying that she can create a better painting.

But Portrait of a Lady on Fire takes on new dimension upon discovering that it was born from a creative and former romantic relationship as complex as the one depicted onscreen—one between Sciamma and Haenel. She was someone who listened to me, she took [care] of what I said, who listened to my anger, and together, mobile, we faced life, we rose up. I also wanted to show that in the film: the lasting, emancipating effect that such a romantic encounter can have on your life. Sciamma's fourth feature length movie, the French film made its debut at Cannes Festival in , where it won Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm awards. It eventually made its wide release in the United States in February Over the course of the film, which takes place in 18th Century Brittany, the pair become much more than artist and object, becoming friends, confidantes, and eventually lovers. This particular painting, however — of a young woman walking calmly on a beach, the bottom of her dress aflame — is one that Marianne has no intention of exhibiting under any name, as it turns out to have been inspired by a deeply personal memory. The painting will serve a single purpose — to tempt the eye and secure the hand of a wealthy Milanese suitor — and it must be painted under highly unusual conditions.
