So, it's curious to watch Return of the Jedi and see Luke Skywalker in dressed in black attire without explanation. Ut's made even stranger when looking at the edition of Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, which identifies the outfit as "black Jedi clothing. Prior to this publication, here's a possible explanation for why Luke had a change of outfit. Both wore robes that are now associated with the Jedi Order, but it's questionable for Luke to assume that is how Jedi typically dress. If Obi-Wan and Yoda have been successfully hiding from the Empire for decades, it wouldn't make sense for them to wear the outfits that would identify them as a Jedi. Therefore, Luke wouldn't make the connection between their robes and customary Jedi attire. Furthermore, George Lucas may not have known at the time that the Jedi had a specific way of dressing. This was still early in the franchise. Since then, the "hermit attire" of Kenobi and Yoda has been associated with the Jedi, but that wasn't etched in stone at the time. Thus, the filmmakers were able to give Luke a different appearance as a fully trained Jedi, as opposed to having him dress like the Force users before him.
