The instructions recommend that before use you keep the doll close to your skin so the doll absorbs your scent, which provides your baby with an added sense of security. Once ready to use, all you need to do to turn the breathing and heartbeat sounds on or off is press the heart on the front of the doll for 3 seconds. If you want to change the volume, there are 3 volume controls that can be changed by pressing a button on the side of the sound box, which is located inside the velcro section on the back of the doll.
