Apropos of absolutely nothing, I was thinking about Madoka Magica today. Specifically, I was thinking about something people used to say a lot about its antagonist, the sociopathic mascot plushie cat alien, Kyubey. In a tone of voice reminiscent of someone scolding a dog that has once again vomited on the clean carpet, Kyubey chides Madoka for being yet one more manipulated, soon-to-be-discarded female who wants to keep the universe from running efficiently and as intended by wasting his time and letting those inconvenient emotions distract her from doing what her betters expect of her. Whether or not Kyubey personally feels the same emotions as the young women he manipulates, he clearly understands their emotions more than well enough to tailor his manipulations and promises to each one of his victims individually. To trick the upright and stubborn Sayaka, Kyubey reminds her of all the good and helpful things she could be doing if only she had the strength, appealing to her keen sense of justice and responsibility so she will become a magical girl in the name of defending people. Hiding behind a mask of smarmy concern, Kyubey is be able to predict not only what he should promise each one of his targets to gain their trust, but also when each one will eventually bother him by having one of their oh-so-predictable breakdowns after they discover someone they trusted with their very soul has been using them and now plans to abandon them at their most vulnerable. Kyubey is evil because he does understand them.

He is a "messenger of magic" that can grant any wish to a certain girl, on the condition that she become a magical girl and fight against witches , who are in fact themselves corrupted magical girls. It is later revealed that his true name is Incubator. Kyubey's true goal in creating magical girls and witches is to counter entropy and stave off the heat death of the universe. Kyubey was created and designed by writer Gen Urobuchi. As one of the primary villains in the series, producer Atsuhiro Iwakami stated that "the mash-up of cuteness and darkness is the central theme to Puella Magi Madoka Magica , and Kyubey is an epitome of that theme. Lovecraft , commenting of the character: "He is not evil, it is his lack of feelings that make him scary. Kyubey is sexless though it apparently identifies as a male extraterrestrial cat -like being posing as a familiar who can grant any wish to a certain girl, on the condition that she becomes a magical girl and fight against witches. When the chosen girl makes a contract with him, he extracts her soul and places it inside a soul gem, reconstructing her body into a shell that is more resilient in order to fight witches. He constantly tries to get Madoka Kaname to make a contract with him, as she allegedly possesses great magical potential within her that would allow her to become the most powerful magical girl. He can only be seen or heard by magical girls and those with "magical" potential and is able to communicate with them telepathically. Kyubey is later revealed to be a member of a hive-minded race called the Incubators, who eat their dead and take their predecessor's place and identity. The Incubators developed the technology to convert emotions into energy, which they use to counter entropy and prevent the impending heat death of the universe. Having evaluated countless races throughout the universe, the Incubators find ideal subjects among humans, specifically pubescent and prepubescent girls as they produce the most energy which reaches its zenith when a magical girl's soul gem turns into a grief seed. Kyubey claims his race lacks emotions or, at least, that those in his race who have emotions are abnormal. He has little understanding of mortality or the value of life, considering his actions to simply be utilitarian in nature despite appearing cruel to others.
His magical hoops have moved further up his ears and his front legs appear to have shortened.
Kyubey is a small, cat-like creature. It has white fur and four ears, one pair representing the average cat and the other similar to those of a rabbit's. It has red eyes and golden rings around its long ears. At the bottom of the ears, it appears that it is separated into three, along with a pink-white fade and three red ovals. It has a large tail and pointy ears, the inside of them being pinkish peach color. On its back is a hot pink egg-shaped oval that can flip open to remove Grief Seed fragments. Despite appearing and sounding somewhat human, Kyubey is an Incubator and has no personal understanding of human emotion.
Of course, these clues were hidden in plain sight and only make sense when a fan revisits Madoka to see how being a magical girl became synonymous with suffering. Kyubey really belongs to a race of cosmic beings known as Incubators, beings who have utilitarian motives for Earth and humanity. Kyubey took on an unassumingly cute appearance not just to disarm would-be magical girls, but because his true form is both incomprehensible and terrifying. Cubey, Kyuubee, Qbey, etc Just as the actual medical device is used to help a newly born baby to grow and mature in a healthy isolated space, the Incubators make magical girls mature into Witches. The Incubators are made of logic and rationality, and feeling any kind of emotion is their equivalent of a mental illness.
