Unlike the first season, which followed the original manga, the second season was advertised as an alternate story spun by Sui Ishida for the anime. The story follows Ken Kaneki, a college student who barely survives a deadly encounter with Rize Kamishiro, his date who reveals herself as a ghoul. He is taken to the hospital in critical condition. After recovering, Kaneki discovers that he underwent a surgery that transformed him into a half-ghoul. Shuu is a skilled martial artist and quite an athlete, some of his most useful attributes are his cunning, power, and impressive sense of fashion. Yoshimura is the manager of small neighbourhood cafe Anteiku and a caring person through and through. While Ken is struggling to deal with becoming part Ghoul, Yoshimura takes him in to teach him the ways that Ghouls can blend with humans. Hinami is a young ghoul who went to Anteiku seeking refuge after her parents were killed by ghoul investigators.
