Mali Bakes is a retro inspired bespoke cake studio. Our ethos is all about fun designs and flavours. We want to create cakes that are truly beautiful, delicious, and unique inside and out. Our studio is also open every Saturday for sliced cakes, so pop in and say hi! Mali is a Thai word meaning Jasmine and is also a very traditional name for girls. I have always gravitated towards this word since I was a little kid. There is something quite blissful and warm about it which is essentially the whole idea behind Mali Bakes.

By Katya Wachtel. By Matheus. Pastry chef Patchanida Chimkire caused an Instagram sensation during the lockdown with her Mali Bakes account, which showcased her colourful vintage-style cakes. She went on to open her first commercial kitchen and shopfront in Thornbury, before bringing her Asian-inspired cakes and sweets closer to the city in Fitzroy. The menu here changes monthly, but offerings have included a matcha chiffon roll filled with sake-soaked cherries and white chocolate cream, a Thai tea custard tart, a small brioche treat filled with chocolate custard and, of course, a variety of layer cakes by the slice. Custom vintage cakes are also available to order online.

Mali Bakes cakes are cheerfully retro, vividly coloured and intriguingly flavoured. Chimkire was working as a pastry chef when the pandemic hit. But with the hospitality industry thrust into hibernation, she decided to look for a silver or candy-coloured lining in all that newfound free time. It popped off. A ton of time and effort went into developing the cake aesthetic. The cake flavours were just as carefully considered.

They are just up the road from our cake studio and in my humble opinion make the best coffee in Melbourne. My local is definitely Lasagne. Their lasagne is juicy, cheesy, and just so satisfying. Great wine list and cocktails with a cool cosy atmosphere. The music selection is always on point and if you go on a Sunday night you can be serenaded by Josh Kelly and his live jazz trio while you soak up lasagne sauce with your garlic bread. For breakfast and brunch our local is Little Tienda. I would go there most weekends and it was such a magical time. Ethiopian stews served on injera bread eaten with your hands, which was totally new to me at the time, and I just loved it. It is a family-run place with live Ethiopian jazz every Sunday night. It was such a multi-sensory experience with the smell of Ethiopian coffee and stews, incredible music, colours, and people, which made for an electric atmosphere that I will never forget.
