Mantra is an American comic book series written by Mike Barr , mainly penciled by Terry Dodson and published by Malibu Comics in the mids, until it was purchased by Marvel Comics. Adam Hughes is credited for the character designs. After the purchase, the title was cancelled after 24 issues and revamped in a new version, with a new protagonist. Mantra is the name of the lead character, an Ultra superhero within Malibu's Ultraverse line of comics. As part of the Ultraverse imprint, the comic was set within a shared universe of super-powered beings conceptualized by writers and artists of Malibu comics. The first volume lasted 24 issues, with a Giant Sized issue. Mantra was also depicted in the Mantra: Spear of Destiny miniseries published in April , that lasted two issues.

Their differences would cause a centuries-long conflict between the two wizards. He was opposed by the Roman general Flavius Aetius, who had allied himself with Theodoric, the king of the Visigoths. Confronted with superior numbers, Attila resorted to sorcery, and allied himself with Boneyard. It was during this battle that Archimage apparently took up arms against his brother and enlisted Lukasz and other knights into his service. For over years, the "Twelve Knights of Archimage" battled against Boneyard and his men. Each side suffered losses, but the magic of the two wizards continually restored their charges to life when they were killed. Boneyard's men were simply restored to life; Archimage's forces were reincarnated into different bodies, "displacing" the soul of the new host. Perhaps as a further indicator of the differing philosophies of the two wizards, Archimage armed his forces with technology, whereas Boneyard's men favored sorcerous weaponry. A balance of power was struck, with neither side able to gain supremacy over the other. As a result, this conflict might have continued on for centuries longer, except for the betrayal of Archimage by one of his trusted knights, Thanasi. Thanasi found out Archimage's true name, his word of power. Thanasi told this name to Boneyard, in exchange for the ability to take over whatever host body he wished.

Those who lived through the decade were forced to endure a continuous barrage of oddball storylines, climatic crises designed to shock longtime readers without offering a satisfying payoff, and of course, bad character designs and themes. Fast forward exactly thirty years, and I decided to give the entire original series a go. Lukasz and his fellow warriors have been fighting the good fight for ages, each time spiritually inhabiting the body of another person the moment they are killed in battle. As such, Lukasz has lived dozens of lives in a number of different bodies, while displacing their original souls, effectively robbing them of their future. This is accomplished via the magical powers of their de facto leader, Archimage. However, things change dramatically when Archimage is betrayed by one of his own warriors, and imprisoned by Boneyard. The trouble is, this final soul transfer lands him in the body of a beautiful woman named Eden Blake, which is where the fun starts.
