The quality of the arcs in Fairy Tail tended to be a bit of a roller coaster past a certain point, and the Tartaros arc delivered in ways the battle against Alvarez didn't. There was more of a sense of danger to it, and delving into them as demons helped further build the world of Fiore, as well as lead to a few cool transformations. A big reason why the arc worked so well was Mard Geer, the end boss of mard geer.

Mard Geer appears for the first time inside of Tartaros' HQ. Sitting on a throne in his room and holding a book with the letters "E N D" written on the cover, Mard Geer talks about Zeref's Demons, the Etherious: beings superior to humans.
