Mega Man X [a] is a series of action platform games released by Capcom. It is a sub-series of the Mega Man franchise previously developed by the same group with Keiji Inafune acting as one of the main staff members. Most of the sequels were megaman x lore to Microsoft Windows.

With the transition to more advanced gaming hardware, series artist Keiji Inafune explained that the development of Mega Man X involved reinventing Mega Man through gameplay expansion and a more mature storyline while still maintaining the basic concepts on which the franchise was built. Much like the NES Mega Man games that came before it, Mega Man X is a standard action-platform game where the player takes control of the eponymous character and must complete a set of eight, initial stages in any order desired.

Thomas Light , the co-father of Light Labs and modern robotics with Dr. Albert W. Wily , was the designer of many great inventions during his lifetime. He and Dr. Wily were responsible for the creation of the Robot Masters in the s , a project which created artificial, humanoid beings with advanced AI that could complete very complex tasks unlike other, more simplistic robots. Thus, these inventions became the highlight of the career of Dr. Light, though Wily would revolt by the end of the decade circa , leading to nearly a decade of fighting between robots and in some cases humans known as the Wily Wars. It was during this time that Dr. Light converted one of the first Robot Masters, Rock , a helpful lab assistant, into a fighting robot known as Mega Man. In his later years, sometime most likely in the s though this is not certain, yet this would make sense as Light was born circa , Dr. Light worked on a project creating a far more advanced Artificial Intelligence.

X was the first robot to possess free will, sentience, and independent thought , no longer requiring restrictive programming or rules to dictate his behavior, making him the first known Reploid. Cain , the scientist who discovered him sealed away by Dr. Light, used X's general architecture in order to put Reploids into regular production, starting a new age of robotics. As a more advanced successor to the original Mega Man, X's design is more detailed and mature-looking.

The first six games in the series were compiled in the anthology Mega Man X Collection and then the Legacy duology collected the entire eight main games. Set years after the original games, the story follows X, the last creation of Dr. Light whose free-willed programming and intelligence allows for countless other free-willed androids called reploids to be produced. When these reploids begin to go "Maverick" and start to rebel against the humans under the command of Sigma , X decides to make up for his creations by joining the Hunters. Throughout the series, he is partnered by his superior Zero , who becomes a playable character from Mega Man X3 onwards. A third character named Axl , joins the group from Mega Man X7 onwards as a rookie.

Rather than continuing the Classic era in which all games up to its release had been set, Mega Man X instead marks the beginning of the X era , taking place roughly years later in the year 21XX and featuring a new cast of characters, including a new protagonist, X. Despite this change in setting, it continues to build upon the Classic action-platformer formula and features a similar structure and gameplay mechanics.
