The film received mixed reviews from critics who praised Foster's direction and performances of the cast but found the premise absurd. He is kicked out by his wife, to the relief of their elder son Porter.

I had no idea what it was about. Every performance here is solid and believable and deep. The movie is about depression. So don't be surprised if you are left feeling I was. The movie concluded with an upbeat feel, but left me yearning for more.

I concede it is possible that a man in depression might be able to heal himself by projecting his personality into a hand puppet. I am not sure it is possible, or even advisable, to make a serious movie about that. We go through the movie with Mel Gibson wearing a toothy beaver on his left hand, and that creates a whole lot of disbelief for us to suspend. Yet here is another of Mel Gibson's fine performances, a reminder that he is after all a superb actor. His personal life is in ruins because of the disease of alcoholism, which he is still struggling with. Though he's responsible for his outrageous acts and statements, I think this is not the good man I have met many times. From what I know about alcoholism, I believe he goes through personality changes, that he is content on some days and consumed by rage and madness on others, and that such changes are symptoms of the disease. Make your own diagnosis. It took some courage on the part of Jodie Foster to direct this film. I believes she knows Gibson's good side and respects his talent.

The other elements within "The Beaver" represent a decisive step down from the work done by Gibson. Riley Thomas Stewart Henry Black. Gibson seems to be the perfect actor to play the troubled protagonist. While it does have a few light-hearted moments here and there, this is probably one of the darkest mainstream films that I have come across in quite some time. For me at least, this was down to the Beaver yes I realise how that sounds but the remarkable thing is that I forgot it was a puppet controlled and voiced by Mel. The film, written by Kyle Killen, is all Ideas: snippets of insight and personal awakening which director Jodie Foster attempts to wring pathos from. You can tell that Meredith cares deeply for Walter and will stop at nothing to be with him. I suspect he's not far from Walter Black himself. Some have criticized Jodie Foster's directing, but I found the film to be very balanced with the right amount of comedy and tragedy. Of course, Porter's head was never bruised after any of these brutal assaults. It just doesn't fit this film. The theme of the film is mental illness and Gibson does a fine fine job in acting - he really is a tremendous actor. Both of these stories were showing how much Walter and Porter were alike and how much Meredith and Norah are alike. So, was Walter getting the beaver to saw his meat for him with its teeth, or something?

The characters also deserve credit, there are a lot of them, but The Beaver does well to give these characters credibility, heart and even complexity. Mel Gibson goes, I think that he was totally the wrong actor for the part of Walter Black. But the puppet is perhaps the mania edge of Walter's bipolar malady. Featured review. Matt Lauer Matt Lauer. But even though the movie fails at certain levels, Gibson's performance was definitely worthy of a much larger recognition. That might sound impossible given the premise of a grown man with a talking Beaver puppet on his hand but the main character who suffers from this mental infliction is so pathetic and you will just feel so lost for him that it isn't funny, not even for a moment. Gibson is great as "Walter Black" and Jodie Foster and the rest of the cast hold their own in here. My favorite thing about the film was the last 30 minutes. Runtime 1 hour 31 minutes.
