Mike Rowe is a TV host, writer, narrator, producer, actor and spokesman.

I was, for a number of years, a civil servant working in both management and policy roles. I left to complete a PhD, sponsored by the National Audit Office, and retain an interest in all things public service and public policy. In research, this has included work on the concept of accountability and on urban regeneration partnerships. More recently, and with colleagues, I have written on community land trusts and housing policy. This interest continues and embraces other forms of community activism and social enterprise. However, my main research interests at present are in policing. Again with colleagues, I have been involved in a six-year ethnographic study of police discretion, observing uniformed officers in the course of their duties.

America has become slowly but undeniably disconnected from the most fundamental elements of civilization—food, energy, education, and the very nature of work itself. Over the last 30 years, America has convinced itself that the best path for the most people is an expensive, four-year degree. As a result, our society has devalued any other path to success and happiness. The push for higher education has coincided with the removal of vocational arts from high schools nationwide. And the effects of this one-two punch have laid the foundation for a widening skills gap and massive student loan debt. The cost of college tuition has soared faster than the cost of food, energy, real estate, and health care. As an apprentice on the TV series Dirty Jobs , Mike Rowe traveled to every state and worked with plumbers, electricians, steamfitters, pipefitters, brick layers, farmers, fishers, and a bunch of other skilled workers who help keep our polite society humming along. They were individuals who found opportunity where no one else thought to look. They were entrepreneurs running successful businesses. They were happy people who managed to figure out a positive work-life balance.

What's the problem?

It's quite likely that Mike Rowe has held more jobs than any living person. Rowe is a co-creator and the host of the series Dirty Jobs , now in its fifth year on the Discovery Channel. On the show, he learns and performs hundreds of jobs that require, it's fair to say, a little bit of getting dirty -- from chick sexer to mushroom farmer, beekeeper to boiler repairman. He and his show celebrate the sweaty and vital labor that's often hidden behind gleaming office towers. His own career has run from the world of opera to the world of QVC shopping television, for which he was a legendary late-night pitchman.
