My guess: After the first two parts of series 5 I guess he's sincere and actually believes in what he says the love that binds us is more important than the power we have, morgana had forgotten that. But then again, Merlin betrayed him and he is destined to kill Arthur, so it might as well be all a big acting play from Modred's side.
