It was widely used at the time, before they began branching out into other popular software and hardware solutions. Since the success of the , MOTU have been launching a wide range of midi interfaces, for all levels of of music production. The casing is solid metal, and so are the knobs which have no wobble at all. This gives it a slightly industrial feel, as most other interfaces at this price point have small, stick-on pads. These chunky strips also house 4 screws which help to keep the case attached to the circuit board inside.

Both units are wrapped in cold hard metal and feel plenty weighty enough for this sort of interface. They have decent feet to prevent them from being pulled off the desk by the weight of your cables and the knobs have a good feel to them with grippy surfaces. What you are drawn to is the displays — they're rather nice. Installation requires a driver from the MOTU website, where you'll also find a bundle of software and loops including a lite version of their own Digital Performer software. It's a small point, but there are so few bad things I can say about these interfaces that I have to make a meal of the ones I find. They also have their own Monitor button to enable direct monitoring. So you could monitor vocals directly through the interface on input 1 while running your guitar through virtual amp modelling software on input 2. I can't think of any other entry-level audio interface that offers these two features independently on each channel. A knob that mixes between direct and software output is present on the M4, but not on the M2. The M4 also has another single button to turn on direct monitoring for inputs 3 and 4. Rounding off the front panel are nicely large monitor knobs and single quarter-inch headphone sockets with volume control.

The M2 offers more flexibility and a better user experience than your average entry-level audio interface. To the right is an LCD screen. This screen displays the levels for each input and the main output. We like how the gain knobs and input controls are directly next to each input. This layout makes the M2 easy to navigate without overthinking. Finally, the large volume knob is a bonus. We prefer this knob to be as large as possible since we use it the most. With the M2, you can record at a bit depth of bit floating-point and a sample rate of up to kHz. It has a round-trip latency as low as 1ms at a kHz sample rate and 64 sample buffer size. The preamps in this unit offer incredibly crisp and clean sound quality.
