It's not often that I can forgive a game for throwing me through the geometry to my doom simply because the game itself is just too damn delightful. I am not the most fast-fingered of platformer players, but when I'm guiding a tiny creature made of wool and stuffing through a maze of fire and spikes, my reaction to failure is more woeful. Little Big Planet 3 made me feel like I was never quite good enough to solve the next puzzle And then I soared. The game begins with sentient light bulb Newton spiriting Sackboy away to the scrapbooked world of Bunkum. Newton opines that Bunkum needs more creative juice and unlooses three ancient Titans, monstrous inspiration-sucking beasts subdued in the past by three great heroes. After the Titans possess Newton and corrupt his intentions, Sackboy finds and recruits the aforementioned heroes: Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop.

A LittleBigPlanet game has many moving parts, and LittleBigPlanet 3 showcases what can go wrong when they aren't quite properly aligned, despite a valiant attempt. New developer Sumo Digital created an enormous puzzle-platformer with equally enormous scope for creation and an enjoyable single-player experience; however, it is undermined by unimaginative co-op and a number of game-breaking bugs. There is more emphasis on story this time around, though. While Swoop who can fly and grab , Oddsock who can run fast and bounce off walls and Toggle who can switch between being heavy and light each get to headline a level upon introduction, they are only intermittently used elsewhere in Adventure mode. Seeing how much fun playing as these characters is, this feels like a missed opportunity. They are fun and cleverly designed — in fact, I enjoyed a handful of them more than some of the Adventure mode levels — and suggest a paradigm shift for how we could play user-generated levels moving forward.
