This was the original station in Nelson. It was not very big and boasted a small booking office. It was based near the old Llancaiach colliery and access from the village of Nelson was from the area where the Handball court is now at the end of Station Terrace. It was in use for over 40 years and was finally replaced by a new modern station by The station at Nelson and Llancaiach was a great improvement on the old Llancaiach station, another access road was built to reach it and the facilities were greatly improved. Great Western owned the station and they spent a lot of money in its construction.

Nelson railway station serves the town of Nelson in Lancashire , and is situated on the East Lancashire Line 2 miles 3 km away from the terminus at Colne. The station is managed by Northern , which also provides its passenger service. It was not until later in the nineteenth century that Nelson came into existence as a town and was previously two separate villages called Great Marsden and Little Marsden. The line was formerly on a through route to Skipton and the Aire Valley, but this was closed beyond Colne in The station forms part of Nelson Interchange, which also includes a new bus station, which opened in December , adjacent to the now disused eastbound platform. The station originally had an island platform configuration, but only the westbound face is now used following the singling of the track southwards to Rose Grove in December The station still has its original platform canopy.

Most stations handled passenger traffic until passenger services were withdrawn in , and most also handled freight. One, Gowanbridge, was never used in revenue service, and Kawatiri had a relatively short lifespan of only 5 years and 21 days.
