The Last Kids on Earth are here to save the day! The animated adaptation of Max Brallier 's hit children's graphic novel series arrived on Netflix today in the form of a one-hour special. The series follows year-old Jack Sullivan Nick Wolfhard and his band of middle-schoolers who live in a decked-out tree house, play video games, and battle zombies in the aftermath of the monster apocalypse. We were able to chat with Wolfhard about his audition for the series and how he landed the lead, plus his take on the character of Jack Sullivan and his experience acting opposite his cast members. What would you do if one day you woke up and the world you knew was under attack by hoards of zombies and aliens from far-off planets? Based on the bestselling graphic novel series of the same name by Max Brallier, the animated Netflix series highlights the importance of bravery, selflessness, and friendship above all else. For fans of the books, the season 2 of the show — out on April 17 — will follow the second novel, The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade. Teen Vogue: What drew you to this project? Were you a fan of the books before joining? Nick Wolfhard: I actually found out about the book series after I auditioned for it originally. At the time I had no idea how huge the series was, so I'm really grateful to get to be a part of it, especially when playing a lead in an ensemble cast. NW: I'm not going to lie, I was nervous, but surprisingly not about that part specifically. I was nervous about making sure all of my line reads and deliveries were good enough during the first recording session or two, but I'm usually paranoid like that. I wouldn't have been cast if they didn't think I was right for the role, so something I need to work on is being more confident in myself.
