Nike has released the latest generation, the Nike Metcon 9, and I tried the shoe at WIT Fitness in London on launch night, hitting beast mode in a minute CrossFit workout designed to show off what the shoe is capable of. The workout consisted of a barbell complex done with a partner, building to max weight. Then, a snatch-and-barbell burpee combo in a rep scheme, and finally an AMRAP of 24 calories on a rowing machine, 24 toes-to-bars and 24 wall balls. It was a serious workout for the shoe and me. After all that, one thing stood out: these are comfy. I own the Nike Metcon 8 and while both generations balance stability and comfort well, my first impressions are that the 9 does it better. I could switch between high-intensity moves—like burpees —and technical lifts more efficiently. The previous generation now feels comparatively stiff and unforgiving during plyometric exercises and shuttle runs. The design notes promise a wider toe box and a more breathable cross-stitch mesh upper that wraps the shoe. The footprint has been reduced to make room for a pronounced wrap-around rope guard, extending to the medial side of the shoe and into the upper for improved support during multi-plain movement. If your primary concern is powerlifting, the firmer Metcon 8 shoe might have a more favorable foot-ground connection, but the enlarged HyperLift plates inserts that increase the heel-to-toe drop of the shoe, providing mobility and mimicking the raised heel of weightlifting shoes in the Metcon 9 counteract the dual-density midsole foam that improves the cushioning. The rubber outsole still grips well and the popular lace lock system has been retained, but with the laces attaching to the tongue this time. On a scale, where 5 is the stiffest, we assessed the Metcon's torsional rigidity with a maximum score of 5. The Best And while we believe that this is one of the best rope climbing trainers in history, we also felt like it was an overkill for most athletes.

Based on this, we assessed the shoe's breathability with an average 3 out of 5 score. This makes much more sense when we put the shoe's cut-in-half upper against the light. As you can see, the shoe lining below the mesh is so dense, it doesn't even let the light shine through! It is very clear that there is a dense layer of textile underneath the mesh.

While the result wasn't as news-breaking as we expected, this cross-trainer showed pretty solid resistance to abrasion. As you can see from our manual test, this trainer is not the one that will bend to your will. As Nike's flagship cross-training shoe, the Metcon 9 is perfectly suitable for athletes who: engage in Crossfit and do a lot of weightlifting perform rope climbs on a regular basis prefer extra room for the toes want a trainer with above-average durability. Pairing that with clunky heels and heavy weight, we cannot recommend this trainer for regular rope jumps. On foot, the difference is not highly critical but we must call Nike out on that one.
