Simply put, a hydration vest — sometimes called a hydration pack or race vest — is an extremely lightweight backpack. It's designed with multiple pouches and pockets to carry everything you might need on a run, making your drinks and essentials easily accessible. Hydration vests come in different volumes and sizes, so there is one for every runner: whether you're commuting km into work or undertaking an adventurous miler on technical trails. As the name suggests, also on any run where you need a handy source of water. The principal items you need will vary depending on the length and terrain of the run. A mile run in an urban environment will involve some different items to a hour or longer road or multi-terrain run that might take in exposed areas of a different character. Again, this is a personal thing, with advantages for both.

Over the years, the hydration running vest market has gone from niche to mainstream. There are even styles specifically designed for technical terrain. With such a high-quality pack market it was hard to pick our top vests, but a few stood out. Three runners, from the Cascades to the Rockies, tested 18 different hydration packs on every kind of run, from quick pre-work morning road workouts to long hour pushes over rugged trails. Our small team included middle-of-the-pack runners and podium-finishers, those who enjoy pushing the pace and those who live for slow steep miles. We tested packs in late summer during prime alpine running season, but we also spent a good amount of time on casual runs close to home. What we found is that the best running packs excel in a few key areas: comfort, bounce specifically, the lack thereof , and pockets. Each runner filled out a detailed questionnaire after each run to rank how well the packs performed in each of those categories.
