I'm looking to hike the Appalacian Trail in the next year and north georgia gmrs thinking of taking a GMRS radio with me to communicate with my brother who will also be hiking. Since the area is so tree-filled and hilly, north georgia gmrs, I was looking at the repeater map on here to determine if I'd have decent repeater coverage for most of the hike.

The first of which is this: How much power do I need to use GMRS over a repeater that is about 16 miles west of my house. I can't seem to hear any signals coming from the repeater, and I don't think my 4 watt handheld would be enough to reach out that far. I'm not sure what equipment I will need to get on the NET meeting and participate. I can hear traffic when I tune a different radio to the frequency. Any tips for a beginner would be greatly appreciated.

Since you said you could reach the repeater with your Baofeng, listen for the weekly net and ask for help during that time.
