The rescue asked the Goodins to adopt an elderly, year-old dog who had been returned to a shelter from a foster family. The dog, Bandit, lived with the Goodins for less than a month before his death. Fostering Bandit was the Goodins' impetus for adopting elderly dogs. OFSDS seeks to improve the lives of senior dogs, which it defines as dogs who are age eight and older. Most of its dogs are at least ten years old, however.

The sanctuary is a home-based one that includes a network of forever foster homes, where dogs are placed in homes within miles of Mount Juliet. It will take a dog back for any reason, Goodin said, because they have promised their dogs a good home for the rest of their lives. The sanctuary consists of two homes, where 50 senior dogs live in a comfortable, homelike environment cared for by the Goodins and three staff members. The dogs sleep wherever they want to — on couches and chairs as well as various dog beds.
