Last year at this time her car threw CEL code P I fixed this problem by replacing the gas cap. The light went off and all was good. Recently ive been getting the same CEL issue. I tried cleaning the gas cap area extensively and greasing the rubber o-ring on the gas cap to help with the seal. It has not cleared the issue. Has anyone had evap issues in the past? Not sure if i should start replacing things like the vapor canister, evap solenoid, or the vapor leak detection pump attached to the canister. I dont want to replace everything, was hoping to figure out which one is having the issue and not have to do a smoke test.

This morning after checking the code and doing some research I cleaned the gas filler tube real well with some steal wool with some paper towels in the tube to keep junk from going into the tank. Also cleaned the gas cap itself real well.

It is frequently caused by a loose or bad gas cap, cracked or disconnected EVAP system hoses, vacuum leaks, or a bad purge valve. Always start by taking a look at the gas cap. It indicates that there is an issue with the Evaporative Emissions System. Its primary function is emissions reduction. It also keeps fuel vapor from escaping the gas tank and releasing into the atmosphere. Storing them in the canister prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. It can detect the pressure at the purge valve by measuring the vacuum pressure and comparing it to what it should be for any given RPM. If your Compass has P, the PCM is detecting that through a leak flower sensor or a leak detection pump.
