Although Edward Zwick's "Pawn Sacrifice" has the great virtue of centering on expert performances by a cast including Tobey Maguire , Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard , it ends up as a sad example of the inherent difficulties of dramatizing a cerebral face-off like the battle royale between chess masters Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.

I don't know how Liev Schreiber did it, but he perfectly channeled a Soviet man from the 70s. I believe the filmmakers were trying to give us a psychological story -- a complete genius with an IQ of but one who also had mental problems. Was he schizophrenic or autistic?
