A man has died following a horror two-car crash in Cataract that closed a main road in both directions for several hours. Login or signup to continue reading. The collision between a sedan and a van occurred on Picton Road, at the intersection of Mount Keira Road, around 1. The male driver of the sedan died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified. The male driver of the van suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by NSW Ambulance rescue helicopter to St George Hospital, in a stable condition. Acting Insp urged people to drive to the conditions and be "patient and cautious while on the road".
A Toyota Hiace mini-van carrying nine family members and travelling to Picton was ripped apart after colliding head-on with a refrigerated truck, leaving seven people dead. The family was returning home to the North Island after attending a loved one's funeral in Dunedin. It is understood that they belong to a large extended family, with many last night yet to be informed of the tragedy. The crash, one of the worst road accidents in recent New Zealand history, has devastated first responders and local residents, some of whom heard the sickening impact from their homes. Seven people, including an infant, were killed "in the blink of an eye" when their silver mini-van appears to have crossed the centreline on State Highway 1 south of Picton about 7. Speaking to RNZ, she said the Government had been investing for some time into road safety. This included police enforcement and more safety barriers - initiatives that had international evidence of bringing down road tolls.

The scene of the fatal crash near Mt Pleasant, south of Picton. Police said the crash was at Mount Pleasant, about 7. One person has critical injuries and one has serious injuries. They have been flown to Wellington Hospital. All of the seven who died and the two flown to Wellington were travelling in the van. The driver of the truck has minor injuries.
