On July 18, the CPS HAWC helicopter went airborne on its inaugural operational flight making Calgary the first municipal police agency in Canada to have a full-time patrol helicopter program. The HAWC helicopter responds to life threatening incidents, air support for ground units, and has an increased efficiency to detect, prevent and reduce crime through aerial patrols. The helicopter is used in all types of calls. The police helicopter is not used for photo radar in the air but if the crew observes a vehicle that is committing an offence, a call is placed to the ground units in the area to deal with the offender. The police helicopter is a very useful tool in keeping the citizens of Calgary safe and providing much needed aerial support to members of the CPS that work on the ground.

The area is a council estate sitting sandwiched in between two private estates all small, very quiet and bordering green belt. Instead the helicopters just circles around and around for a lengthy period of time then flies off. It can be once or a few times a day. It often will circle round for a while on Friday or Saturday evenings sometimes with its search light on which you can see passing through the garden. Any ideas as to why police helicopters are flying round a quiet residential area on a daily basis? Just to add that at weekends it can be flying quite low with search light on after 11pm at night. There never appears to be any police on the ground and no crimes reported so they seem to be doing just for the sake of it and for practice? I did consider thermal imaging of cannabis farms but surely they would have acted by now and not still sending out helicopters twice a day to take images of the same house for 4 years? The other two housing areas are private.
