Biologically engineered Demi-Gods made by a god-king to help rule the vast brutal universe of Warhammer: 40K. The Primarchs are giants amongst men that come with their own equally massive issues; these test tube babies turned uber mensch have had quite the impact on the wider galaxy. They're an interesting bunch that is unique on the surface level and absolutely fascinating when you start to dig into their backstory as they're all different, with some having absolutely heart-wrenching arcs that have evolved over the years — and a huge showdown between them set for sometime in the future. For those interested in these large lads, here's every Primarch and where they are now. The forces of Chaos have split the galaxy in two, the Necrons are awakening en masse and the Tyranids are pushing deeper into Imperial space. Despite the best efforts of the new Primaris Space Marines and the reawakened Loyalist Primarchs, more worlds are burning than ever before. The lore in Warhammer 40, is constantly evolving as the best and brightest of the Black Library continue to churn out some great books and background fluff.

The Emperor used his own DNA in their creation, and they were designed to be gods among men; immortal giants with superhuman physique and intelligence, towering above the Space Marines as they do over mortal men. They were also incredibly charismatic, as their main role was to be generals and leaders of the Imperial military. The Primarchs were created in a secret facility in the Himalayan Mountains under the tightest security. However, the forces of Chaos somehow managed to spirit the infants away just prior to their maturation. They were scattered on different worlds across the galaxy, beyond the Emperor's reach. The genetic material of a single Primarch was used to found a single Space Marine Legion , twenty in total. This war of unification was known as the Great Crusade. One by one the Primarchs were found and united with their Legions, performing great deeds and becoming legends of the Imperium. This golden age ended with the Horus Heresy , when nine turned traitors and attempted to place Primarch Horus on the Imperial throne. The Imperium prevailed, but all loyalist Primarchs are since either slain, disappeared or incapacitated. Of the traitor Primarchs, some were killed but most remain Daemon Princes in the realm of Chaos. The order of Primarch rediscovery follows the patterns of Dante's Inferno and Paradiso, for the Traitors and Loyalists respectively, as do many of their personalities and the concepts they symbolise or emobody. Rick Priestley, one of the major sources for their creation, was heavily into both Dante and Milton at the time, and many of the themes involved in their works were utilised.

At the height of the Great Crusadeprimarcs, the Imperial Warmaster Horus fell to the temptations of Chaosand convinced eight of his fellow brother primarcs to rebel against the Emperor and follow him in his attempt to supplant the Master of Mankind. Humanity primarcs very close to complete destruction at the hands of Horus, primarcs, and the effects of the Heresy are still being felt throughout the imperium ten thousand years later.

Theirs will be the strength to prevail, not only when victory lies within easy reach, but even when it seems unattainable, when doom settles like a shroud all about. They were, for unknown reasons, deliberately expunged along with the Astartes of their Legions from all known Imperial records and archives before the onset of the Horus Heresy in the early 31 st Millennium. Referred to as "the forgotten and the purged" it is known only that the missing primarchs and their Legions are listed as having been "deleted from Imperial records. This formal censure and erasure from official records is known as an Edict of Obliteration , also called a Damnatio Memoriae , a High Gothic phrase meaning "condemnation of memory. This is the official Imperial policy of deliberately destroying any records, icons or other symbols or monuments pertaining to an individual or organisation, usually of the Imperial elite, who has been declared Excommunicate Traitoris by the Emperor of Mankind before He was interred within the Golden Throne , the High Lords of Terra or the Inquisition.

The Primarch of the Imperial Fists and known as one of the greatest heroes in the Imperium to have ever lived. Yet the primarchs, for all their expressed superiority and seeming immortality, were still men, and they possessed too many of the same Human flaws that have bedeviled Mankind since the birth of the species. But the Chaos Gods intervened to foil their great adversary's plans and the primarchs were sprited away through the Warp to other Human-settled planets of the galaxy. When he reached maturity, Corvus led a campaign of rebellion against the Masters , overthrowing them in a grand uprising and casting off the shackles of centuries of Terran oppression. Today, all but one of the primarchs are either damned in servitude to the gods of Chaos , lost to current knowledge of their whereabouts or dead. In M42 he leads the Death Guard in wars across the galaxy. Jaghatai Khan. There is very little known about these enigmatic beings and their abilities. But, there was a stipulation, Corvus could complete his uprising , but once freedom was attained he was to join his Father. Around a century later, at the beginning of M31, that all changed. At least one of the primarchs, Corvus Corax , is known to have briefly stayed in his designated apartment during a visit to Terra at the beginning of the Horus Heresy. And it tortured his mind. Perhaps Corax has returned, twisted by the Warp into a dark monster that seeks vengeance against those who betrayed the Emperor during the Heresy.
