Almost every Star Wars movie ends with some kind of lightsaber fight. Deadly duels are the culmination of each film because they make for epic climaxes, but they also personify the other happenings in the films. He resisted it throughout Revenge of the Sith , and even during Order 66, he tried to avoid the dark side. But following his lava-filled defeat, he fully embraced his darkness and became a Sith Lord. An even better example came in The Phantom Menace. At the end of the fight, Maul was dead, so the Jedi won the day. Yet the light side lost the Duel of the Fates because Qui-Gon -- whom Palpatine knew was the only Jedi who could have prevented Anakin from falling to the dark side -- was dead. From that perspective, the duel was definitely a tragedy. However, it's possible that Qui-Gon knew he was going to die and sacrificed himself anyway. But in recent years, things have become more complicated. On top of that, Star Wars has been filled with figures surviving from even worse wounds. Palpatine survived a fall down a reactor shaft; Vader was mutilated and burned with lava, and Maul was bisected with a lightsaber. With all of those characters surviving terrible wounds, it seems weird that Qui-Gon succumbed to a simple stab. The easy explanation was that Qui-Gon didn't use the dark side to sustain himself.

Had the decision been made to have him survive the Duel of the Fates, we could be looking at a significantly different Star Wars story.
