RedditMap uses Pushshift , an archive of posts and comments made to Reddit, to examine co-commenting patterns. By counting what users left which comments, we can cluster subreddits together. The more users who leave comments on both communities, the nearer those communities are placed to each on a map. We are not the first to build a map of Reddit. In learning from these inspiring projects, we hoped to do a few new things with our map. We wanted to build a map that changes over time, reflecting the ways the Reddit community grows and evolves. We wanted to build a map that represented both how machines group subreddits together and the sometimes different ways humans order topics.

This code renders a map of reddit. Each dot on the map is subreddit. Two dots within the same cluster are usually close to each other if multiple users frequently leave comments on both subreddits. I processed ,, unique comments that redditors left in years - and computed Jaccard Similarity between subreddits. Then I treated relationships between subreddits as a graph clustering problem. Once clusters are computed, I treated them as a graph layout problem and created an SVG file. Along the way I strived for simplicity. I wanted to let people edit the SVG file, correct it, and contribute to the development of the map. There is a lot of things that I'd love to improve.
