Rhys McClenaghan after winning gold in the men's pommel horse final at the World Championships in Antwerp earlier this month.

He is a double world champion on pommel horse , having won gold in and , the first Irish artistic gymnast ever to win world championship gold. He is a two-time European champion and a Commonwealth Games champion on the same apparatus. McClenaghan is the first Irish gymnast to compete in a European final and also the first to win a European medal. He also competed for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games , [8] winning the gold medal on the pommel horse. He followed this by winning the European Championships , pipping the reigning Olympic and two-time world champion, Max Whitlock on both occasions.

Caught between the blessing and the curse of being last man on the pommel horse in the World Championship final, Rhys McClenaghan held his cool nerve and biting ambition to win another magnificent gold medal at the Antwerp Sportpaleis on Saturday afternoon. Defending champion from Liverpool this time last year, McClenaghan, rounding up the eight-man contest, knew exactly what was required to win or indeed lose a medal — and he delivered another flawless routine, his score of The victory also secures McClenaghan his Paris Olympic qualification, those Games now just under 10 months away, everything about this performance underlining a new level of consistency in the difficulty and execution of his routine. He certainly impressed both fronts here too, scoring 6. On our arrival Rhys McClenaghan is doing some gentle stretching on the floor of the National Gymnastics training centre. He follows us upstairs, where McClenaghan takes a seat and places his World Championship gold medal on the table in front of him. Dressed in a black T-shirt he appears surprisingly slight, 23 now and unfailingly boyish, his already considerable achievements resting easy on his still young shoulders. This is his place of work, has been since , when as a teenager McClenaghan moved down from his home in Newtownards to make full use of this suitably world-class facility, viewed below now through the interior windows, at the north end of the Sport Ireland Campus at Abbotstown,. One small mistake, on any given day of competition, there is no reward. After a few reminders of that earlier in the season, McClenaghan found the perfect reward at a packed Bank Arena in Liverpool last Saturday afternoon, winning a first global medal for Ireland with a magnificent performance at the World Championships.
