Samuel John Peploe pronounced PEP-low; 27 January — 11 October was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter, noted for his still life works and for being one of the group of four painters that became known as the Scottish Colourists. He visited the Netherlands in , returning with reproductions of work by Rembrandt and Frans Hals. From , he undertook painting trips to northern France and the Hebrides with his friend J. Fergusson , another of the Scottish Colourists. Inspired by the bright sunlight, he experimented with the bold use of colour, and the influence of the rustic realism of French painters is evident in his landscapes.

Peploe was one of artists now known as the Scottish Colourists. However, in his early work, he tended to use a restricted palette of dark colours, as in this self-portrait. The fluidity of his handling of paint can also be seen here. Peploe was influenced by the dark tones used by the Dutch painter Frans Hals, whose work he had seen in the National Gallery in Edinburgh.
