Isla Vista is host to five student housing cooperatives that are a part of the larger Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative. The purpose of the Santa Barbara Student Housing coop is to provide low rent cooperative housing for student, staff, and faculty of UC Santa Barbara regardless of gender, race, social, political, or religious affiliation, and thereby influencing the community to eliminate prejudice santa barbara student housing cooperative discrimination.

For several years, five housing co-ops under the Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative umbrella have existed to provide affordable housing and a sense of community for students in the college town of Isla Vista. The group operates five co-op houses in total, each with its own cultures and histories: Manley, Biko, Merton, Newman and Dolores. Some of these houses offer opportunities for residents of marginalized communities to live together; others offer spaces of community for those with similar interests and passions. The Nexus interviewed members of every house with the exception of Manley. Housing co-op residents live in a community of mutual understanding of individual financial needs, with rents and other additional charges being adjusted based on the needs and financial needs of each member of the cooperative.

Each building or house is organized differently in architecture as they were purchased after they had been built for another use. Newman was formerly an apartment structure and has individual units; Manley, Dolores, and Biko are actually designed as multi room residences; Merton was the former University Religious Center , and was converted into a living space. Each one of the houses definitively has its own specific character. The co-ops are all decorated by their residents. This means any number of hand drawn or painted walls, ceilings or surfaces. It is not uncommon for new residents to repaint their rooms to their liking. Meals are made by and or for every one, and decided democratically. Meals tend to lean toward the vegetarian or vegan direction but meat is also consumed by any number of the residents. You will find most co-ops have large very well stocked kitchens and pantries. Cookware is often brought in by tenants and shared. As with many other aspects of the town, cookware and food often gets left behind after a resident moves out, leading to an accumulation of both in the kitchens.

And more often than you probably realize, co-ops play a vital part of your everyday life. Many in the Isla Vista community regarded these evictions as racially motivated, santa barbara student housing cooperative, since nearly all of the men, women, and children who were evicted were Hispanic and had little access to legal representation on their behalf. The coops in Isla Vista are epicenters of artistic expression, alternative thought, social activism and creativity within the frantic party atmosphered boom and bust community that is Isla Vista. The coop system organizes the annual "Coopula" festival featuring local musical talent, spoken word, local organic food and outdoor entertainment in People's Park in Isla Vista. In , the massively successful and now institutionalized "Chillavista" festival was organized out of the BIKO coop, and featured musical talent from the IV community including many bands spawned from and frequently performing at Isla Vista Coops. In , the Isla Vista coops provided pivotal support to the over residents evicted from their homes in Isla Vista by Conquest Housing.

In the Upstairs, Merton is home to eighteen Mertonians who occupy twelve bedrooms along with a shared kitchen, living room, and large communal bathroom.
