Aleksandra "Shura" Lange Baryshnikov born March 5, [1] is an American dancer, choreographer, dance educator, and actress. Baryshnikov trained in classical ballet as a child, and grew up accompanying her mother to different filming locations. In high school Baryshnikov competed in diving, ran track, rode horses, and played field hockey. She went on to attend Marlboro College in Vermont , where she majored in American studies and also studied theatre and contemporary dance. She is a member of Actors' Equity Association. Advanced search… Manage your Profile. Shura Baryshnikov is an interdisciplinary artist who works broadly as a dancer, actor, improvisor, choreographer, and somatic movement educator. Performing improvisation, set choreography, as well as contemporary text and classical verse, Shura is compelled to question ideals of specialization in the performing arts. Ultimately interested in applications of practice in pedagogy, process, and performance, Shura employs work in Viewpoints Technique, Safety Release Technique, Action Theater, and Contact Improvisation to co-create deeply-sensitized, collaborative spaces. She is a member of Actors' Equity Association. I am a working artist; I am a practitioner.

The biblical story, in which Salome agrees to dance for lascivious stepfather Herod in exchange for the head of his prisoner John the Baptist, was adapted by Wilde into a potent one-act. It became famous for its dance of the seven veils and was censored for decades in England. Salome needs to move through her world in a physically visceral way. Baryshnikov says she was excited to take on the role since it was so dependent on movement. And she says her experience with improvisational dance has helped her find her way into the character. Baryshnikov says she is choreographing her dance but is careful not to make the structure too formal. Baryshnikov landed in Rhode Island when her husband was working on his PhD. Now that they are 10 and 12, she has a little more flexibility, although the rehearsal break included a check-in with the baby sitter.
