Marvel's new Silver Surfer: Rebirth series is exploring the past of the character and his relationship with Thanos at a time when the Mad Titan was not hellbent on conquest and destruction, but actually willing to help Surfer protect the universe. In the process, it is also showing how this less villainous version of Thanos was much more powerful than after he entered the era of being truly, irredeemably evil. Thanos is Marvel's most popular villain, but his depiction has varied over the course of the decades. Due to the Mad Titan's complex personality, he has been depicted sometimes as a contemplative scientist, others as a power-hungry madman obsessed with death or rather, Death, his beloved mistress. The most recent appearances of Thanos have been influenced by his portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the ultimate villain, so readers tend to forget that, in the past, Thanos has acted as a hero too, protecting the universe from threats even greater than himself. Marvel's most recent Silver Surfer limited series is set at exactly that time, shortly after Thanos was tasked by Adam Warlock to protect the Reality Gem, the most powerful of the Infinity Stones.
