Set in the early Star Wars era known as the Old Republic, the Sith Empire was a major force to be reckoned with before its inevitable fall ahead of the High Republic. As seen in both Legends and Canon, the Sith Empire is incredibly fascinating, existing at a time when there were just as many Sith as there were Jedi unlike what's seen in the Skywalker saga. However, the chaotic and power-hungry nature of the dark side ensured that the Sith Empire couldn't have lasted forever in the galaxy far, far away. Long before Palpatine's Galactic Empire revived the Sith's control over the galaxy as seen in Revenge of the Sith , the Sith Empire and its many iterations was the dominant dark side power during the Old Republic era. Although much of its history and key figures were de-canonized as Legends following the Disney Star Wars canon reboot , there are still elements that have gone on to be part of the established continuity. Growing in power thanks to the pureblood Sith species, the rogue Jedi who had embraced the dark side became known as the Sith Lords, having been exiled from the Republic after the conflict known as the Hundred-Year Darkness. Seeking to wage war and destroy the Republic one day, the leadership of the Sith's new Emperor Darth Vitiate ensured the True Sith Empire's survival, even as other Sith Lords such as Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma sought to bring back the Golden Age of the Sith in the interim while Vitiate's forces remained anonymously hidden for centuries. Corrupted to the dark side by Vitiate, Darth Revan was meant to prepare the galaxy for the Sith Empire's return. Instead, Revan and his corrupted apprentice Malak chose to create their own Sith Empire.

This powerful new civilization began expanding rapidly, led by a growing population of ambitious dark Force-users. Though the Sith were successful at first, the Jedi Order rallied back to defeat their dark counterparts, systematically destroying the Sith civilization on Korriban. Unbeknownst to the Jedi however, the last Emperor of the Sith managed to escape the carnage and fled into Deep Space with his most trusted Dark Lords. These surviving Sith began rebuilding their society on a distant planet, hoping to one-day return for revenge. Over the course of the next thousand years, the Sith Empire recovered its strength.
