Skylander

Skylanders is a toys-to-life action-adventure video game franchise published by Activision. The games take place in Skylands, a realm of floating islands located at the center of the universe that is often threatened by evil forces who seek to rule it and gain access to all worlds. The player, who is considered to be a Portal Master, commands the Skylanders to stop Kaos and other evil threats. The console versions of each game follow identical storylines, while the Nintendo 3DS versions have different stories. Spyro's Adventure is the first game in the series and features 32 Skylanders, four for each of the eight elements. The Skylanders seek to restore the Core of Light, which Kaos destroyed, by collecting the Eternal Sources of each element and other components. Giants is the second installment in the series and a direct sequel to Spyro's Adventure. It introduces a new team of Skylanders called the Giants , who were the first Skylanders assembled to stop the Arkeyans' reign and are strong enough to lift, throw, and destroy trees and rocks. They must stop Kaos after he reactivates the Arkeyan Conquertron and attempts to take over Skylands by resurrecting the Arkeyans. Swap Force is the third installment in the franchise and takes place in another part of Skylands called the Cloudbreak Islands. It introduces a new group of Skylanders called the Swap Force, who have the ability to swap their top and bottom halves and abilities. Together, the Swap Force and the Skylanders fight to prevent Kaos and his mother from ruining the performance on Mount Cloudbreak. Trap Team is the fourth installment in the franchise.

The Skylanders are legendary heroes and champions, protectors of their world, Skylands , as well as the main playable characters in the Skylanders series. Using their powerful abilities, the Skylanders have defended their world for generations, keeping peace and balance. At one point, Kaos banished many of the Skylanders to Earth , while others arrived by different means. Far away from the magic of Skylands, they shrunk and turned into immobile figures , requiring a Portal of Power in order to return to Skylands and come back to life. Recruited by Portal Masters or graduated from Skylanders Academy , a new Skylander's image is engraved onto the Book of Skylanders and is bound to it. The elemental alignment of each Skylander makes them strong against one element and weak against another element in the older games' Battle Arenas : Earth is strong against Tech, Tech is strong against Magic, Magic is strong against Undead, Undead is strong against Life, Life is strong against Water, Water is strong against Fire, Fire is strong against Air, and Air is strong against Earth. This "rock-paper-scissors" mechanic is somewhat offset by the variety of stats and abilities.

Even though it has now been dormant for more than six years, Skylanders was at one point Activision's main franchise for the children's target demographic. While Call of Duty dominated the market for young adults, this toys-to-life series was all the rage for young players, as it expanded into a television show, novels, and more. Ironically, Skylanders was born as a spin-off from the Spyro universe, and it faded away just as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro made their triumphant return. However, this series still has some good fun to offer, so here's a list of all the main games, ranked from worst to best. Progressing through the game also unlocks higher-level items capable of increasing character stats such as attack power, armor, or speed, and gives the game an RPG-style progression that pushes you to hunt for hidden chests that might contain more powerful gear. The combined experience of creating your own character and then evolving that character as you play Imaginators alongside your favorite toy characters feels like the most innovative leap the series has taken so far. Playing with your Skylander adds another layer of interactivity with the Skylanders universe that turns some of the focus inward, back to the game itself.
