The Rift is a hold in southeast Skyrim , with its capital in Riften. It is initially affiliated with the Stormcloaks , but can be captured by the Imperials after completing Compelling Tribute and The Battle for Fort Greenwall. It can also change sides as part of negotiations during Season Unending. The Rift is the southernmost of Skyrim's holds, sitting on a massive plateau in the southeastern corner of the province. The Rift borders both Morrowind and Cyrodiil , and is separated from the rest of the world by steep cliffs and mountains, including the Jerall Mountains , the Velothi Mountains , and the legendary Throat of the World. It holds two large lakes as well as autumnal deciduous forests. In addition to its capital in Riften, the Rift also houses the settlements of Ivarstead and Shor's Stone.

The Rift is the most southeasterly of the nine Holds of Skyrim. It is one of the four oldest holds in Skyrim, known collectively as Old Holds. Its coat of arms is two crossed daggers. Its capital city, Riften, is home to the Thieves Guild. The Rift is located around the southeastern corner of Skyrim and borders Morrowind to the east and Cyrodiil to the south. As a result, its main stronghold, Fort Greenwall , lies just north of Riften, between it and Shor's Stone further north of that. The Rift is teeming with wildlife, both docile and hostile. It serves as an excellent hunting ground, and as such encounters with hunters and poachers are common. Bears , Sabre Cats , Frostbite Spiders and wolves make a common practice of hiding in the foliage and ambushing unsuspecting travelers. All of these combined can make traversing the Rift very arduous and time-consuming, even potentially dangerous for low-leveled players. In addition, the dense forest and uneven terrain make landing spots for dragons few and far between, meaning that, even if a dragon were to appear, one may not get a chance to kill it throughout most of the region, as it will fly away shortly after spawning. Trolls are not uncommon here, either.
